The visit at a glance
Cliff’s Estate is about 32 km from Salem and ten minutes past Yercaud lake, open 8am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, by advance booking only. Allow about three hours for a keeper-guided walk and tasting. The estate is open all year: coffee is picked November to January, pepper in March and April, and cardamom in every month. March to August the ghat road is slow going and the walk is a wet one.
Getting here
The last hour is the good part.
The ghat road leaves the plains at Kannankurichi and turns twenty times before it reaches the lake. Each bend is numbered on the rock. Drive it in daylight the first time, keep to the inside on blind turns, and give the buses room.
-
Leg 01 · 32 km · ~40 min
Salem to Yercaud
Out through Kannankurichi, then onto the ghat. Twenty numbered hairpins, a viewpoint at bend thirteen worth stopping for, and about ten degrees cooler at the top than where you started.
-
Leg 02 · ~10 min
Yercaud lake to the estate
Past the lake and out along the ridge road until the plantations close over the top. The last stretch is single-track and unsurfaced in parts. Any car will manage it dry; go slowly in monsoon.

Arrival
The gate
Park inside the gate on the level ground by the office. Somebody will be expecting you by name — there is no reception desk and there never will be.

Three ways to spend a morning

The estate year
Open all year. The road is the only thing that closes.
Before you come up
Dress for a hillside, not a showroom.
This is a working farm on a slope. The ground is uneven, often damp, and the walk goes where the crop is rather than where a path would be convenient.
Seven in the morning on the ridge, before the cloud burns off. This is the hour worth setting an alarm for.

Accessibility, honestly
What the slope will and will not allow.
The drying yard, the mill and the compost yard, all on flat ground near the gate. Around forty minutes, and you still see most of how the estate actually works.

Tell us in advance. Mobility needs, allergies, or a group with small children — say so when you book and the route is planned around it rather than improvised at the gate.
